Premier League Results: United and Newcastle produce Boxing Day cracker

Old Trafford witnesses seven goals as Manchester United and Newcastle United put on a real show to light up the Boxing Day fixtures

Manchester United produced a quintessential performance of the Sir Alex Ferguson era when edging a seven-goal thriller against Newcastle today. 

Wobbly in defence but dangerous in attack, the Reds went behind three times at Old Trafford but summoned up a reaction every time, topped with an injury time winner to reward in-play backers in the match odds market on Betfair at a high of 6.411/2. The win from behind was a winning bet at odds of 8.07/1. 

And United's hopes of winning another Premier League title were given a huge boost as Sunderland inflicted a second defeat of the season on champions Manchester City to delight the Stadium of Light faithful thanks to a lone goal from former City man Adam Johnson. A home victory to nil was backed at a massive 16.015/1 on Betfair.

United have further tightened in the Premier League winner market at 1.434/9 with City to a season high of 5.79/2. Backed at a high of 27.026/1 in the aftermath of Roberto di Matteo's sacking, Chelsea are now 9.28/1 to win the title after a 1-0 win at Norwich. 

Everton and West Brom both took big strides towards European football after picking up 2-1 wins at the expense of Wigan and QPR respectively. The pair are locked on 33 points. the next round of fixtures will tell us much about their chances of hanging on - Everton face Chelsea while West Brom go to Old Trafford.  

QPR are back at the bottom of the table after the defeat and now trade at 1.511/2 to go down. Wigan are also in the relegation places courtesy of Southampton's late equaliser at Craven Cottage, and are odds-against to be playing Championship football next year at 2.265/4. Reading picked up a point at home to Swansea after a 0-0 draw, but are sandwiched between QPR and Wigan in the table. Brian McDermott's men are 1.192/11 to go down.
