The golden girl
The Betfair market is moving towards a Jess Ennis win as Wiggo drifts...
Could Jess Ennis be the surprise winner of Sports Personality of the Year?
On the morning of the big show, the Olympic gold medal winning heptathlete is the clear second favourite in the betting ahead of Mo Farah. Currently trading at 5.59/2, the price on her claiming the SPOTY crown is getting shorter and shorter all the time.
Long-time favourite Bradley Wiggins - who also boasts a Tour de France winner's medal alongside his Olympic gold - still leads the market and looks the likeliest winner at 1.618/13, but the gamble on Ennis could be significant.
The Sheffield girl bore the pressure of competing across the opening days of the athletics programme. Though the heptathlon favourite, the pressure on Ennis was immense and her performance was heavily scrutinised as she was expected to set the tone for Team GB's achievements in track and field.
Athletics is always the major sport in any Olympics, and track and field stars have a strong Spoty record. The public's desire to reward an athlete may be heightened in the year the Games came to London.
