Kempton Placepot: Sunday December 2

Charlie Longsdon looks set for a good day

Whatever you think of jumpers' bumpers, one thing is for certain: a Placepot perm based largely on them shouldn't contain many lines. Keith Melrose approaches today's Kempton card with due caution.

13:30 - The opener is a regulation maiden bumper, which makes for a slightly easier time of things. Our choice rests between Henryville and Golanova, with the former's cramped odds and the latter's slightly speedier pedigree swinging things the way of Golanova.

14:00 - Free Thinking is favourite for this mares' event and it's easy to imagine her proving the best of these in time, but there have to be some misgivings today. She's the product of a meeting between Hernando and Liberthine, a good pairing if you want to breed a Grand National winner but not so strong if your first target is a polytrack bumper. At odds on, I'm willing to oppose Free Thinking with the experienced Definitely Glad, who finished behind a pair of useful types on her debut in the summer.

14:35 - Although the first 'jumpers' bumper' we face, leg three is in theory easier than the two that precede it. Pure Style was running to a useful level in bumpers as recently as mid-October and, what's more, he has a Flat-oriented pedigree that should see him to best advantage in a race which could well prove to be muddling.

15:05 - It's rare I'll see one I personally fancy as a win single on a jumpers' bumper card, but Cousin Khee in this race does tempt me. He's perhaps not the best jumper in the race, that honour probably going to Master Dillon, but Cousin Khee's profile lends itself much better to him handling conditions here and, as a result, he's another banker in our perm.

15:35 - This is more like it- a bunch of proper, experienced jumpers to pick our way through, while the field's been reduced to six, making our task tougher. We're going to need to take two this time, starting with Cross of Honour, who is only a year or so out of actual bumpers and has always looked more about speed than stamina over obstacles. Second in is Likearollingstone, who is simply progressive and has travelled well enough in recent starts to think he'll cope with this test.

16:05 - A high proportion of the runners in the last leg are proven at three miles or even further, so this goes down as just about the toughest hurdle of all. Favourite Dawn Commander is probably worth a place as he possesses a useful level of ability while, looking at the card overall, his yard seem to be taking this meeting more seriously than most. Brunswick Gold goes in as insurance; he travels well through his races, won over two and a half miles at Fakenham not so long ago and gives his running more often than not.

Selections:

13:30 - 4
14:00 - 3
14:35 - 3
