Men's French Open Betting: Janowicz and Nieminen set for a battle royal on the clay

Janowicz may have to go the distance to win today Janowicz may have to go the distance to win today

The French Open continues in damp conditions on Wednesday and tennis expert Sean Calvert has unearthed two bets to consider on day four at Roland Garros...

It was another winning day at the French Open on Tuesday - I'm not too sure how, but I'll certainly take it.

Things had looked bad when Nico Almagro went 0-5 down to Jack Sock, but the Spaniard was clearly injured and retired after throwing a few water bottles around, thus voiding my handicap wager.

Then Andrey Golubev, who excelled himself yet again with his choice of clothing, took the third set off Andy Murray to make my 3-0 Murray lay a winner on the day.

It was a very entertaining match between Murray and Golubev, who played some supreme tennis in between a multitude of unforced errors, but he managed to hold on long enough to take the required set.

Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Tomas Berdych and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga are all in action today and it's hard to see the first three being troubled, although Jo may be tested by Jurgen Melzer.

Conditions will be tough though, with the forecast varying from thunderstorms to showers to light rain and the courts are set to be damp and heavy again.

It may well lead to some grinds and one match that looks certain to be an up and down encounter is the Jerzy Janowicz vs Jarkko Nieminen clash at around 2pm today.

I wouldn't be putting a penny of my hard-earned cash on JJ to win any sort of tennis match outright at the moment and 3-0 layers of the Pole in his opening round clash with Victor Estrella that I mentioned on day one would have been in profit there.

Today's match has five sets written all over it to me, with Janowicz desperate to string some wins together after a rotten season and Nieminen struggling for form too.

The Finn loves a five set grind and he's already had one this week against the equally out of form Michal Przysiezny, which doesn't lessen the chances of it happening again where Jarkko is concerned.

Nieminen has played 23 five set matches in majors and JJ has chipped in with half a dozen already since 2012 and with the Pole's record against lefties being pretty poor he'll do well to win this in three or four sets.

Janowicz has a 1-5 record against left-handers on clay and his price is more about assumed fatigue regarding his opponent today, but Jarkko is tough and will battle for as long as it takes today.

Backing five sets at 3.711/4 looks a good call here.

There are plenty of short priced favourites again today and the ones I suggested yesterday all won, apart from Almagro, which was void, but value looks thin on the ground to me.

One match where there could be a bit of value in laying the favourite is the Milos Raonic/Jiri Vesely clash, but I've seen a few too many chokes from the Czech and that puts me off backing him to win.

The Canadian has a 4-7 record against lefties on clay and he'll do well to win in straight sets against the Czech here, which makes the lay of 3-0 at 2.45n/a a good choice.

Recommended Bets
Lay Raonic to beat Vesely 3-0 at 2.45n/a
Back five sets in Janowicz/Nieminen at 3.711/4
