Abernant Stakes: Maarek in Newmarket frame

Maarek could reappear at Newmarket.

David Nagle's star sprinter Maarek could return to action in next week's Abernant Stakes at Newmarket...

The six-year-old son of Pivotal, rated 120 by Timeform, profited from a wet summer when enjoying a fantastic campaign in 2012, winning a couple of handicaps, two Group Threes and the prestigious Qipco British Champions Sprint on Champions Day at Ascot in October.

Nagle is looking forward to seeing his charge tackle some of the major sprint prizes this season, with the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot high on the agenda, but conditions will dictate where he lines up.

Nagle said: "He's back in work and hopefully he'll be able to run in the next couple of weeks.

"We know how much he likes soft ground, so I'd like to see a bit of rain - I'm probably the only one, though!

"We've entered him in the Group Three at Newmarket's Craven meeting (Abernant, April 18) and there is a Listed race at Naas a couple of days later.

"He's in the Duke Of York Stakes (May 15) later on and you'll probably see him entered for all the obvious races. He'll go wherever the ground is right.

"I'd love to see it come up soft at Royal Ascot for the Diamond Jubilee.

"If we have a dry summer, we might have to look at going to France with him, we'll just see how it goes.

"I think he's grown a bit since last season and might still be improving.

"He deserves a crack at a Group One somewhere along the line."
