"In overcoming early trouble last week, Hollyoak Laelaps took his record to four wins from five and rates a value bet for Sittingbourne handler Raymond Butler to overcome equally prolific Downtown Flyer in the Sussex Puppy Trophy final"
Hove's Sussex Puppy Trophy final - supported by the one-off Ballyregan Bob Trophy - provide the highlights on Racing Post Greyhound TV tonight. Darrell Williams pinpoints the best bets for both tonight and tomorrow's live action.
If last year's Sussex Puppy Trophy final- where Jaytee Apachee beat Coolavanny Bert - is any guide, tonight's final (21:06) should be a race to keep a close eye on over the next few months. But solving it is far from easy after last week's somewhat muddling heats. Nevertheless in overcoming early trouble, Hollyoak Laelaps took his record to four wins from five and rates a value bet for Sittingbourne handler Raymond Butler to overcome equally prolific Downtown Flyer. That rival looks an obvious danger and whatever his fate tonight, a dog to follow long-term for Matt Dartnall, although he may have to give second best tonight given the selection's superior early speed.
Punters searching for winners, regardless of price, should however make the Ballyregan Bob Trophy their first stop (21:24) where recent Leger third Droopys Xavier looks very hard to oppose after a highly impressive win over the 695m trip last week. Claude Gardiner's charge is confidently expected to make every post a winning one.
Aughacasla Suzi and Larrikin renew rivalry after the latter caught the eye in defeat last week and with a draw inside his rival tonight should reverse the form over 475m at 20:18. However, well-drawn Malbay Phanter, who boosts an excellent CD record when drawn in trap six looks far better berthed and can beat them both.
There's no prize for originality in selecting Westmead Shaw at Henlow (21:48) but Nick Savva's grand old-timer has been an excellent servant at the Bedfordshire track over the years and looks ripe for following up his recent win over the 428m trip given the likelihood that he will gain first run.
Tolerton Dasher, a runaway winner in last week's sprint, can repeat the feat (19:25), with the return to trap four appearing a bonus for James McDonald's raider.
The three semi-finals of the Maiden Derby look far from easy to solve and we'll limit ourselves to just the one selection in Nishas Guitar (20:10). Darren Whitton's runner has form over further here and after a good heat win last week can take advantage of s possible speed war between Mannix Pet and obvious danger Alterra.
Romford's Friday card headlines with a Maiden Trophy final (21:24) where improving puppy Courts Ad Nina looks the one to beat given that an early lead, although more than possible here, does not appear a necessity for Jim Reynolds' youngster judged on her heat win the other night.
Slick Seamist however should be able to use her early pace to good effort by claiming the bitches race (21:56) with her trap one draw not expected to cause any trapping issues.
Lughill Poppy, despite a missed break last time, has generally proved pretty consistent in her recent sprints and can capture the 225m contest at 20:34.
