US Masters Switcher:
Adam Scott birdied the second play-off hole to win the Masters
Adam Scott is a Major winner at last and becomes the first Australian golfer to win the US Masters. Mike Norman explains...
Adam Scott is the new US Masters champion after beating Angel Cabrera on the second extra hole at a rain-drenched Augusta National.
Scott - who was generally available to back at around 36.035/1 pre-tournament - trailed the joint overnight leaders Cabrera and Brandt Snedeker by a single stroke and looked on course for another frustrating defeat after countless birdie putts narrowly missed.
And when compatriot Jason Day birdied three consecutive holes from the 13th hole it looked like Scott's Major breakthrough would have to wait for another tournament at least.
But bogies for Day - who hit a low of 1.75/7 In-Play - on 16 and 17 opened the door and it was Scott and 2009 champion Cabrera who stepped through courtesy of terrific birdies on the final hole.
Playing one group ahead of Cabrera, Scott's 20-foot birdie putt on 18 found the bottom of the cup to spark wild celebrations from the 32-year-old, but he hadn't allowed for the Argentinian's brilliant approach that set up a three-foot birdie putt of his own.
Cabrera duly tapped in, and so to a play-off the 77th US Masters went.
Both players parred the first extra hole (the 18th) after chipping and putting from just off the green, and it was Cabrera that looked to have the advantage on the second extra hole (the 10th) when his 200-yard approach finished 20-feet from the cup.
But Scott's approach from 196 yards was even better, landing hole high 15-feet right of the flag.
Cabrera's birdie attempt finished agonisingly just an inch away, and that left Scott - who famously finished with four consecutive bogies to lose last year's Open Championship - to roll in his putt to become the first Australian to don a Green Jacket in its illustrious history.
Scott was matched at a high of 65.064/1 during the tournament, while Cabrera hit a low of 1.9110/11 when holding a three-stroke lead early in round four.
The next Major tournament is the US Open at Merion Golf Club in June where Scott is available to back at 23.022/1 behind 6.25/1 favourite Tiger Woods.
