Simon Dyson should enjoy conditions in Korea
With breezy conditions expected in Korea, Paul Krishnamurty recommends a couple of wind-specialists for this week's trading column...
There is always a temptation in co-sanctioned Asian Tour events to back the under-rated local who will enjoy an advantage in the conditions, but we may be better off looking closer to home for this week's Ballantines Championship. As Steve Rawlings explains in his detailed tournament preview, wind will almost certainly be a big factor all week and that should play to the strengths of a couple of Englishman available at triple-figure odds.
First up, at his best Simon Dyson would be among the favourites. He has the perfect combination of stellar Asian form stretching back over more than a decade, along with top-class form at various exposed British tracks. Five of his six European Tour victories came on links layouts and his other four titles were on the Asian Tour. Lack of recent form lies behind a dismissive 110.0109/1 quote, but he did at least shoot four rounds of 70 or better to finish 11th in Indonesia on his penultimate start. If he starts well, the market will respect Dyson, shortening his odds much faster than others.
Second, Matthew Baldwin ticks a lot of boxes and remains a plausible first-time winner, regularly available at huge odds. Based at Royal Birkdale, it was no surprise to see him bely huge odds to finish fifth in the Scottish Open and follow up with a top-25 in the Open Championship. Baldwin was fifth on his penultimate start at another windswept venue for the Hassan Trophy and ranks fifth for par-fives amongst this line-up in 2013. That must bode well for a par-72 where the long holes are pivotal to scoring.
The trading plan is to stake 3.5 units on the pair, then place orders to lay both at 12.011/1 and 3.02/1, more than trebling our money if either hits the first target.
