Timeform highlight bets at both Sandown and Wolverhampton on Saturday...
The opening race on Saturday is Sandown's 13:30, in which the John Quinn-trained Calculated Risk is fancied to land the spoils on handicap debut. The six-year-old, who was a fair performer on the Flat, opened his account on his first attempt in this sphere in impressive fashion at Doncaster in January, beating Aazif by six lengths, before running below that level on his next outing at Huntingdon. However he took a step back in the right direction at Kelso last time, with the suspicion being that he is better than he managed to show that day as he was seemingly being unsuited by the steady pace, and he could well prove to be starting life in handicaps on a fair mark.
The highlight of the day is the Imperial Cup, due off at 15:15, and as ever it looks an incredibly tricky puzzle to solve with it being possible to make a case for any number of the contenders. It would come as no surprise were Kazlian to bounce back to form but it may pay to focus on arguably the most unexposed pair, namely Mr Mole and Tominator. The first mentioned made a mockery of his opening handicap mark at Taunton last time and a 12 lb rise for that seems fair but, with slight concerns with regards to that one's attitude following his somewhat wayward display at Wincanton the time before, we will side with Tominator, who makes his handicap debut over hurdles today. The six-year-old was useful on the Flat, winning the Northumberland Plate and finishing third in the Cesarewitch at his best, and although his jumping wasn't quite as slick as it could have been in his first two starts in this sphere it was much improved when he cosily got the better of subsequent winner Leviathan over C&D last time. An opening handicap mark of 130 seems lenient when considering both his exploits on the Flat and the potential for improvement that he clearly boasts over timber, and he could well take this event on his way to contesting one of the handicaps at Cheltenham.
The 16:05 at Lingfield is an intriguing affair and it is possible to make a strong case for three of the runners, namely Barnet Fair, Harrison George and Intransigent. The first mentioned boasts a couple of wins on the all-weather and has a style of racing that is ideally suited to the surface, so is of obvious interest if ready to go after a four month break, whilst the return to six furlongs will be very much in favour of the well-handicapped Harrison George, but the Andrew Balding-trained Intransigent has rapidly developed an excellent record on polytrack and he is taken to further enhance that. The four-year-old, who is a half-brother to smart polytrack performer Border Music, has won three of his four starts on the surface and put up his best effort yet when scoring at Kempton on his most recent start in September; Intransigent's yard has been in good form since the turn of the year and he should go very close to adding to their tally.
