Monday's SmartPlays come from Lingfield
Timeform's SmartPlays team pick out three bets from today's card at Lingfield.
SmartPlay number one runs in the third race (15:10) and is arguably the most attention-grabbing of the trio, currently priced at 15.5n/a. Elusive Hawk in particular is interesting, but that one is short enough and the best value appears to lie with veteran Satwa Laird. A winner from a BHA mark of 69 in late-summer last year, Satwa Laird spent the rest of the campaign running just a little below form, yet fairly consistently with it. He made his somewhat belated return a couple of weeks ago at Wolverhampton over what's probably an inadequate trip and duly shaped as though better for the outing. Back under more suitable conditions and, crucially, 3 lb lower than his last winning mark, Satwa Laird mightn't be the likeliest winner but certainly warrants plenty of respect at current odds.
In the very next race at 15:40, a fillies' handicap over six furlongs, we have SmartPlay number two. The strength in the betting of the relatively unexposed Red Larkspur is potentially ominous, but it has surely left Amethyst Dawn at a tasty price. Although she's clearly not the force of old, Amethyst Dawn has been knocking on the door so far this year, having excuses when making the frame on her first three starts then finding just the progressive (and aforementioned) Elusive Hawk too good over today's trip at Kempton last time. With few in the field able to match her for recent consistency, Amethyst Dawn is a solid proposition against the likely favourite.
Finally, we turn attention to the 16:40, which is another handicap, this time over 13 furlongs. It looks a reasonably good opportunity for Cozy Tiger to build on a more encouraging run last time. Lightly raced throughout his career, Cozy Tiger has dropped a long way in the weights (16 lbs) since last winning at the tail end of 2010. His most recent run at Kempton a little less than a fortnight ago was Cozy Tiger's most promising since, with him not quite settling off a moderate pace and ultimately left behind once the dash for home started, nonetheless staying on encouragingly for a close fourth. There appears to be a slightly better pace angle in this race, while the slight step up in trip may also suit, so Cozy Tiger looks at least fairly priced in spite of an absence from the winners' enclosure of more than two years.
