David Pipe's Knight Pass is on a retrieval mission today
With Cheltenham getting ever closer, we head to a good-looking jumps card at Doncaster for today's trio of SmartPlays.
The highly-regarded Snake Eyes joins returning 2011 Cheltenham Bumper winner Cheltenian and New Year's Eve, runner up in that event last year, in a cracking novice hurdle, though there are reasons to suggest Minella Forfitness (15:25) will get the better of all of them today. Nicky Henderson's son of Westerner confirmed the promise of his hurdling debut to get the better of several useful sorts from the Flat in a maiden event here earlier this month and with more to come, he can make light of a 6 lb penalty for that success.
Knight Pass (15:55) was a useful bumper performer who won twice over hurdles for Warren Greatrex last term and was well fancied for the valuable 'Fixed Brush' handicap hurdle on Betfair Chase day at Haydock in November on his first start for David Pipe. After travelling really well until four out there, he folded tamely as if to suggest he was amiss, but he's been given plenty of time to recover and is well worth another chance.
Purple Bay is related to several useful sorts and despite never making it to the track when with Mahmood Al Zarooni is an interesting candidate for the concluding bumper, but there are a couple more newcomers who catch the eye, none more so than Paul Webber's Bayley's Dream (17:05), whose dam won in this sphere on debut for the Oxfordshire trainer before landing a listed event at Sandown. With the assistance of AP McCoy in the saddle, a big run is expected and he can further improve the healthy winning strike rate for this trainer/jockey combination.
