Michael Vaughan: England can strike back with a more positive approach

Jonathan Trott scored 68 in Hamilton - but used up 90 balls in the process

New Zealand won the first ODI in comprehensive fashion after a sluggish performance with the bat from the tourists. But this England side have generally bounced back well from defeat and - provided the top order score more rapidly - can level the series, says Michael Vaughan

It was pretty comfortable for New Zealand in Hamilton in the end but England didn't help themselves by starting so slowly. My concern with them is that the top four are 'old school' in their approach; getting themselves in and scoring steadily rather than going at the bowlers.

With the new fielding restrictions you can make up a lot of the run rate in the last 15 overs, but you still need a couple of firecrackers in those opening overs.

Jonathan Trott scored 68, but it was a poor innings for the team, using up 90 balls. A score of 258 was never going to be enough with a decent wicket and short boundaries - and against a team with Brendon McCullum in it!

I don't understand why Kevin Pietersen isn't playing - that number three position should be his. They talk about 'resting' KP, but he wasn't in India, so I think it raises questions about his long-term involvement in the 50-over format.

Bringing in Jos Buttler is an option to add firepower to the batting, but I don't think England need to change the personnel, just the approach. They need to be more proactive and take the attack to the bowlers. The team will know this, though - they would have had a team meeting to analyse what went wrong.

This England side have shown they are good at bouncing back from defeat and it is a must-win game, so you'd have to fancy them to win it, but they are on the short side at 1.68/13 pre-match. I'd advise waiting for the first 15 or 20 overs before getting involved here as the close nature of these games means you should be able to get a better price.

A more confident pre-match bet is backing 275 or more in the First Innings Runs market. I also wouldn't be averse to small stakes on 300 or more - it's another ground with short boundaries and England got 340 here in 2008.

On the Top Batsman markets, McCullum would be an obvious pick but I like the look of Kane Williamson, in at number three for New Zealand and trading at 5.04/1. He picked up from where he left off in South Africa in the first ODI with a classy 74 and looks to be a player.

I might have criticised him earlier, but I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Trott top scoring for England, trading at 4.94/1. He's a stubborn bugger and won't be worried about any of the criticism, so every chance of a big score.
