Fairyhouse is one of two meetings in Ireland today
We have picked out three SmartPlays on the New Year's day cards at Fairyhouse and Tramore...
A long-standing maiden with form figures of 'pu0p', Celtic Wish hardly leaps off the page in the 12:30 at Tramore. However, Willie Mullins is adept at revitalising horses he inherits from rival yards so it would come as no surprise were this one to belatedly open his account today. He has bits and pieces of form which make him very interesting off this mark and this won't take a great deal of winning.
Wise Oscar was unlucky to bump into a rejuvenated Bog Warrior at this track last month and should be able to go one better in the handicap hurdle at 13:25. A three pound rise for that effort does not look harsh, particularly in light of the latter's follow-up victory at Punchestown on Monday and Dessie Hughes could hardly have his team in better order.
High Desert bounced back to his best to get the bettter of Champagne Agent in a maiden hurdle at Fairyhouse last time and he looks the one to beat in the beginners chase at 14:45. He didn't progress as expected after finishing second to Flemenstar on his chasing bow last season but a reproduction of that sort of form would be more than good enough to land this contest.
