Black Caviar: 'Wonder From Down Under' will benefit from workout

Black Caviar will have a workout at Caulfield on Saturday

Black Caviar's jockey Luke Nolen says last week's visit to Sandown for a jump out has improved the fitness of the champion mare but she will benefit greatly from a race day exhibition gallop scheduled for this weekend.

Nolen reported that Black Caviar has pleased the Peter Moody stable since her impressive trial over 800m at Sandown as she progresses towards her planned return to racing in he G1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on February 16.

'She's tightened up a bit since the jumpout,' Nolen said.

'Everyone that works with her has given their endorsement. The message is that she's the Black Caviar of old.

'But there's still improvement to come and her work at Caulfield on Saturday will tighten her up again.'

Saturday's workout, scheduled after the second race, will be a first for Black Caviar, who is also entered in the Newmarket Handicap on March 9, as it will be the first time she has had a serious public gallop at a race meeting as opposed to when she has paraded on race days.

'Peter (Moody) has planned on doing it in the past but we've never got there, but Saturday will give her fans a chance to see her again," Nolen said.

Nolen reaffirmed that Moody is taking her preparation one day at a time and the slightest hiccup could see her retired.

'We've been protective of her record this far and if there was any issue or she showed she didn't want to be here she'd be retired," Nolen said.

"But at this stage it's full steam ahead."
