Underestimating the Ruby Walsh-ridden Kauto Stone may be unwise
Timeform look at each runner in the valuable Cleeve Hurdle...
Oscar Whisky gained a second Aintree Hurdle win in April, and not hard pressed to win valuable prizes at Ascot and here this term. Stamina seemed stretched in World Hurdle over C&D, and opposable for the win.
Reve de Sivola has thrived since returned to hurdles this winter, chasing home Big Buck's at Newbury, and winning Long Walk at Ascot in fine style. Test of stamina here will suit ideally, and shortlisted again.
Lovcen progressed well over hurdles last season, winning Grade 1 novice at Aintree in April. No joy this time around, and reverts to timber having failed to cut any ice in a pair of novice chases.
Carruthers landed the Hennessy Gold Cup last season, and took advantage of lesser opposition to return to winning ways at Ffos Las on Boxing Day. Long time since he tackled hurdles, though, and passed over here.
Crack Away Jack was a good second to Big Buck's at Aintree in April, and runner-up to Tidal Bay on his return at Wetherby. No match for Oscar Whisky here (2m) last time, though, and weak finishing remains a worry.
Cross Kennon finished fourth to Big Buck's in the 2011 World Hurdle, and returned to form when second to Goulanes in a 25f handicap here in November. Just a respectable effort last time, though, and others stronger.
Kauto Stone proved too good for First Lieutenant in JNwine Chase at Down Royal in November. Flopped in King George last time, but much respected on French hurdles form, and cheekpieces refitted now.
Knockara Beau was better known as a chaser these days, but was runner-up to Grands Crus in this contest in 2011. Doubtful whether he can hit those heights again, though, and readily opposed.
Walkon ran well to chase home Al Ferof in the Paddy Power, and lost little caste in defeat behind Unioniste here in December. Handles testing ground well, but stamina for 3m must be taken on trust.
Kentford Grey Lady was highly progressive last year when runner-up to Quevega at the Festival, and won on return at Sandown last month. Only third in listed event there last time, and much more needed at this level.
Timeform 1-2-3:
1. Kauto Stone
2. Reve de Sivola
3. Oscar Whisky
Timeform View: Oscar Whisky would be an automatic choice over shorter, but he didn't seem to get home in last year's World Hurdle, and is opposed as a result. Reve de Sivola is a big player on recent form, but a chance is taken on Kauto Stone, who makes his first start over hurdles since joining Paul Nicholls.
