Today's SmartPlays come from Kempton
A choice of two all-weather meetings today, but our three SmartPlays all come from Kempton.
Our first selection runs in the second race, a mile handicap held at 13:50. Though young, unexposed horses are thin on the ground, there are a number of in-form older campaigners and one of them, Hurricane Spirit, looks especially interesting. He had a rather lean spell during the summer last year but has got back into the groove since being dropped to claiming class, winning at Lingfield and at this course. The latter of those two wins was especially encouraging, as Hurricane Spirit looked back in his best form for a while in accounting for the fairly useful Saharia. On his first start for current trainer Hans Adielsson last June, he won a C&D handicap from a 1 lb higher mark than he runs off today, so Hurricane Spirit is clearly well enough handicapped to win if he can confirm the impression of his latest run.
The 12-furlong handicap which comes an hour later is pretty competitive considering it's only a 0-60, with a fair number of unexposed or well-handicapped sorts among the field. At the age of seven and without a handicap win in more than a dozen tries, you wouldn't expect Lady of Burgundy to be among them, though she's not had much racing for one her age and has plenty of form in the book to suggest she's well ahead of a BHA mark of 60. She hasn't been seen since September, when her yard were showing the first green shoots of recovery, but she shaped well that day and her stable has only gone from strength to strength since. With all her best form coming on the all-weather (some at this trip), Lady of Burgundy looks to have plenty going her way and today could belatedly deliver her first handicap success.
It's another hour before our final SmartPlay, which comes in a three-year-old handicap over 11 furlongs. The betting has the race between Hidden Link and Great Ormond, with the latter currently preferred in the betting. However, they met earlier this month, with Hidden Link coming out on top. The winner has gone up just 3 lb for his efforts, while Great Ormond received a hefty 9 lb rise for winning comfortably at Wolverhampton three days later. The perception is that the step up to one and a half miles proved the making of Great Ormond, but on the evidence of their previous meeting you'd expect Hidden Link to derive no less benefit from the longer trip and, 6 lb better off at the weights now, he's the selection.
