Has David Pipe discovered another jewel in Garynella?

The National Hunt cards at Doncaster and Newbury host our SmartPlays today.

Several of the horses that contested a valuable Doncaster three mile event in December return to the South Yorkshire track for today's Grimthorpe Chase and Court By Surprise, the victor on that occasion, can come out on top once more. Well supported in the ante-post market for January's abandoned Sky Bet Chase, Emma Lavelle's lightly-raced charge appears to have been kept fresh for this and though the yard have yet to hit the target in 2013, there have been signs in the past week or two suggesting the corner is about to be turned.

Bookmakers offering prices for Cheltenham's upcoming handicaps have been diving for cover ever since Ballynagour dotted up on his first start for David Pipe at Warwick last week and the Nicholashayne trainer may be aiming a further shot across the bows today with Garynella, another French import with multiple Festival entries, who looks attractively-weighted in Newbury's feature race, the Greatwood Gold Cup. Listed-class over hurdles, he shaped well when third on first start for this yard in December and though The Knoxs will attempt to give Paul Nicholls his sixth winner in this race since 2006, he'll do well to concede over a stone to the selection who sports a tongue strap for the first time this afternoon.

The following race at the Berkshire track sees Bradbury make his first start over hurdles since joining the Donald McCain stable and, having won on the all-weather for his new yard in January, he looks to build on the fair form he showed over timber for James Bethell now stepped up in trip. Last seen in this sphere when fifth behind Cape Express in an Aintree handicap in the autumn, he can take this from a revised BHA mark of 119.
