Paul Nicholls trains the useful prospect Southfield Theatre
We head to Exeter and Newcastle for today's best bets...
Firth of The Clyde has already had four runs over hurdles and though winless so far has posted decent runner-up efforts on his last two starts, both over two miles. The extra half-mile he'll travel in this novice event is more than likely going to bring more improvement and though several of the hurdling debutants in the field are likely sorts, Malcolm Jefferson's charge can make his experience count and break his duck.
Southfield Theatre's last outing, his first over hurdles, came in a Grade 2 event at Sandown in December and the fact that he was sent off a 6/4 favourite there highlights the regard he's held in at Paul Nicholls' yard. Finishing third to subsequent Challow Hurdle winner and leading festival fancy Taquin de Seuil was no disgrace and the combination of a three month break and a drop in grade can see him get off the mark over timber at the second time of asking.
Newcastle's card ends with a bumper where all seven runners are making their debuts and Donald McCain is represented by Kings Bandit, who cost connections €80,000 as a three-year-old. A half-brother to useful chaser Gentle Ranger, he makes plenty of appeal on paper and can make a winning debut.
