Gary Crispe looks at Friday's meeting at Kranji.
Champion Singapore rider Joao Moreira fresh from a great weekend of racing is all set to repeat the performance this Friday, the first meeting of a month-long programme of poly track racing.
Moreira will ride Golden Sand Steed in a very competitive class 4 handicap over 1100m at 14:50 but the premier rider will face stiff opposition from Angry Cat and One Smart Cat.
Golden Sand Steed is only lightly raced winning two of his seven race starts both coming on the poly, his three runs on the turf yielding just two placings.
The three-year-old gelding in the Mark Walker stable has hit form quickly this campaign. He has raced four times since a spell for the two wins on the poly and looks ideally placed to add another this evening.
Timeform rated 75, Golden Sand Steed comes off a fourth placing in this class 21 days ago. Wearing blinkers for the first time, he had no luck in the race. After missing the start he raced wide throughout but still battled on strongly behind Fish Rabbitfish for fourth.
That effort followed a third on the turf in graduation class over 1200m behind Savannah Dancer.
The engagement of Moreira by Walker is significant as he has never previously ridden the gelding but replaces stable apprentice Shafiq who was aboard in his two earlier victories.
Drawn awkwardly in 10, Moreira will be looking for cover early in a race that looks to have plenty of early speed, and producing him late.
One Smart Cat from the Baertschiger stable has been prepared for a bold first up run. Another lightly raced three-year-old with upside, he has raced only five times for two wins both on the poly and both coming at his last two starts before a 133 day spell. Those efforts earning him a Timeform rating of 75.
Baertschiger has given the gelding two solid barrier trials in preparation for tonight. Although he did not win either both efforts were first class, the last trial being last week against proven weight for age galloper Mr Big coming in fifth under double wraps.
One Smart Cat is drawn well and has the speed to be right with the lead throughout. He will take plenty of catching.
Another "cat" to keep him busy is top weight Angry Cat from the Tan stable.
Manoel Nunes will again take the ride, the Brazilian having been aboard the gelding at his last two appearances that includes a win and second placing.
Two back he led throughout over the 1100m of tonight's race on the poly holding out a determined late challenge from Indulge. Then last start found Travertine too strong under the same race conditions. Both races were in class 4 company.
Angry Cat is timeform rated 74, but under the handicap conditions on weight adjusted ratings has to find a few pounds to trouble the aforementioned pair.
All the same these three round out the genuine winning chances as there are doubts over the prospects of some of their rivals.
For example the Brian Dean-trained Jackpot resumes from a 110 day break but has only placed on the poly to date.
Last campaign he looked a promising type winning his maiden over 1400m on turf by seven lengths and then was just beaten by Hot Gold in a good quality three-year-old race.
If those ratings were bought to the poly tonight he would take plenty of beating but that is the unknown fact. Although very early in his career he was a length behind Master King on the poly over this distance in juvenile company so he can handle it.
A query runner is Kompressor from the Chua Choon Bok stable.
The four-year-old has not raced since April last year after pulling up lame behind No Reason under these race conditions.
Clearly he has experienced a few issues since then delaying his racetrack return. He has not been sighted since his trial early in January so that is a slight concern.
He comes in very well at the weights should he reproduce anything like his best form, so the market might be the best guide tonight, especially as he was a fresh up winner last preparation almost twelve months ago.
