Kempton Placepot: Wednesday April 3

Today's Placepot comes under the Kempton floodlights

Small fields abound wherever we go today, making a small-stakes approach on the Placepot a must. Kempton is the chosen target.

17:30 - Delving straight in with two selections is hardly the best start for our slimline perm, but this is a seven-runner race and there are better opportunities to cut out lines later on. Classy Trick goes down as our lead selection, his being placed in three nurseries from an identical mark in December evidence enough that he can do so again. An absence since is a slight concern, though one largely allayed by trainer Richard Fahey's fearsome record at this time of year, one that suggest he readies his horses for the spring better than most. Solvanna goes in as backup, as she has fitness on her side and is the only established front-runner in the field.

18:00 - The uncomfortable fact is that, under any other remit, we'd be obliged to include all four in the second leg as it would be wrong to brand any of them as a no-hoper. However, we're going to force this strict regime and pick out just two. Secret of Success and Polish Crown are our weapons of choice, both being last-time winners with plenty of speed. Secret of Success is arguably the better prospect, his debut win representing fairly solid form, but this drop to the minimum trip is ever so slightly worrying on pedigree, while Polish Crown has fewer worries in that regard, speed quite clearly his chief asset, admittedly rather in spite of pedigree.

18:30 - This, in theory, is where it gets easier: Hurricane Spirit has been gobbling up claimers like this all winter and, although a good number of today's rivals are equally solid, with two places' grace we can be confident of Hurricane Spirit taking us through.

19:00 - Two have come out of this maiden at the time of writing, leaving us with seven, but fear not: there's a tremendously well-bred runner in there, with solid handicap form to his name already, while he's also in the care of the champion trainer. Khudoua is the horse in question, and the only faint drawbacks are his unproven stamina (he'll more than likely stay, and may get away with it even if he doesn't) and short price.

19:30 - A deceptively tricky leg, so tricky we're going to solve it using a 12-year-old. Jake The Snake perhaps isn't quite the horse he was at the height of his powers, but that's reflected in his mark and he's generally run well this year so far, his reappearance excepted. Second spot goes to Twenty One Choice, whose career is firmly in its infancy compared with that of Jake The Snake, but that's precisely why he's in: this strong traveller is on a four-timer in handicaps, the fact he's not been seen in six months the only snag so far as today is concerned.

20:00 - A low-grade handicap for three-year-olds to finish, made even more tricky by the fact that most are reappearing. Not so our two selections, Actonetaketwo and Idle Curiosity, who both took steps forward last time and remain leniently treated. What's more, Idle Curiosity is likely to be suited by this step up in distance.

Selections:
17:30 - 1, 2
18:00 - 1, 4
18:30 - 5
19:00 - 8
19:30 - 9, 10
20:00 - 7, 9
= 8 lines
