The best of today's action can be found at Kempton
David Cleary returns to bring you his two best bets on Monday...
The start of Lincoln week sees Flat racing the focus of the majority of the action this Monday afternoon, with cards on the polytrack at both Kempton and Wolverhampton, Southwell supplying the day's jumping action. Kempton stages easily the best race of the day, in the seven-furlong handicap at 16.20. This looks competitive but with several not seen out this year and doubts about how well run the race will be, it doesn't make a lot of appeal from a punting viewpoint.
Of more interest is the mile-and-a-quarter contest at 15.20, in which Flamborough Breeze bids for a fourtrh win in her last five starts. She is still on a favourable mark and will surely go well, though she's priced accordingly and there is a slight doubt whether she'll be so effective over today's trip, stepping back up from a mile. Gaelic Silver makes plenty of appeal against her. He did really well in a steadily-run affair over today's trip at Lingfield last time and would have gone closer still with a trouble-free run. Gaelic Silver has been given a chance by the handicapper, has no questions to answer with regard to trip or surface and can continue the good form of his trainer Gary Moore.
It comes to something when the best quality race on the card is a claiming hurdle, but that is the situation at Southwell this afternoon. No fewer than five of the field have BHA marks of 120 or above, with Bellflower Boy the clear pick on form, getting weight from all his main rivals. However, he's not been at his best since his reappearance, admittedly raced mainly over fences, and the form of his win in a selling hurdle at Taunton two starts ago wouldn't be good enough against stronger company this afternoon. He ran a better race off his much lower chase mark last time, but in a race lacking depth. Bellflower Boy looks worth opposing in this better race, with Dontpaytheferryman making most appeal. He has run with credit in competitive class 2 handicaps at Musselburgh on his last two starts. Those were both at two miles, but he's effective over today's trip as well, and testing ground will be no problem. The refitting of a visor is a positive sign too, his three wins last season all with it in place. Dontpaytheferryman hasn't run over fixed brush hurdles before, but that is a slight concern and he can gain a first success of the campaign.
