With the 2014 golf major season about to start, Pinnacle Sports are offering odds on how many majors Phil Mickelson will win this season. With a fresh injury scare and poor recent form, can Lefty add a sixth major title or even complete the grand Slam in 2014?

Poor form & Injury concerns may hinder Mickelson

Phil Mickelson is the only player of the three – Tiger Woods & Rory McIlroy – to claim a major last year – British Open – and will aim to win the US Open to complete a career Grand Slam – where he has finished runner-up an incredible six times. However, Mickelson is struggling for both form and fitness at the start of 2014 ahead of the first major of the year.

Like Woods – who pulled out of the Masters – Mickelson has suffered an injury setback. The American left-hander had to withdraw for the second time this year due to injury at the Texas Open.

Aside from his injury worries Mickelson’s form is concerning. Aside from his runner-up finish in Abu Dhabi, he has failed to record a top 10 in 2014 – In 26 rounds he has scored under 70 just six times.

Bettors will need to decide how much Mickelson’s injury worries and poor form may impede his major chances in 2014.

Mickelson’s major statistics

As usual Mickelson will be amongst the favourites for all four 2014 major tournaments and another win will take ‘Lefty’ to six career major titles, and a long way to securing his legacy as one of the greatest players in golf’s illustrious history.

Mickelson has historically performed well at the Masters – three wins (2004, 2006 & 2010) – and another win would put him alongside Tiger Woods and Arnold Palmer as one of four players to have won the Masters four times.

Historically Mickelson performs well in the majors finishing inside the top ten on average every 2.4 tournaments, while he records a top five finish every 3.5 major events. His form in major golf is so impressive that only twice since 1993 – 1997 & 2007 – has he failed to record at least one top 10 finish – highlighting he is more often than not in a position to win a major.

Odds of 1.190* are available if you think Mickelson will fail to add to his five major titles in 2014, while 5.460* is on offer for bettors who believe he will win one major title. The Californian has never won more than one major in a season and this is reflected in odds of 23.660* for him to do the double.
