This Week in Football History: John O'Shea's cheeky chip and the greatest goals scored by a defender.

John O'Shea celebrates scoring for Manchester United. He didn't score many but always seemed delightfully shocked when he did.

John O'Shea is a cult hero at Old Trafford and back in Ireland. Today Adrian North looks back on the unexpected nature of his best goal for United - scored 10 years ago this week - and ranks the top 10 goals by defenders...

February 1, 2005 - Arsenal 2-4 Man Utd, Highbury: Even O'Shea seemed to surprise himself here.

When David Luiz charged forward at the onrushing sight of Kroos, Kheidera, and Muller at 4-0 down this summer he must have known just how deep a grave he had dug for himself. And while Luiz gets a lot of flack for his often foolhardy marauding into the opposition's half, I am in the minority who sympathises with the goofy-haired Brazilian here.

The thing is, David Luiz thinks he is the next Fernando Hierro, when in reality he needs to realise he's just a poor man's John O'Shea. And until Luiz nutmegs a player of Figo's quality or plays in goal for 10 minutes, he will never reach the level of the mighty Irishman.

The sight of an old fashioned big bastard of a defender going for a once-in-a-career stroll into the oppositions box will always be one of football's funniest. Here is Tony Adams thinking he's Ronald Koeman and here is Carragher heartbreakingly falling short of one the great farewell stories in his final game at Anfield.

But one of my favourite moments of a defender ending up where he has no right to be occurred on February 1, 2005, in a cracker of a game between Arsenal and United at Highbury.

At the height of the Wenger-Fergie rivalry this was a game that included a whole host of vicious tackles, goals from Vieira, Bergkamp, Giggs, and Ronaldo, Roy Keane's infamous pre-game outburst, and a final goal from O'Shea that is everyone's favourite of the lot.

It's O'Shea bewildered look that sums the whole situation up. United, away to arch-rivals Arsenal, leading 3-2 with five minutes to go, and out of nowhere their substitute defensive midfielder decided to wander 70-yards out of position to casually chip Manuel Almunia. Fergie even looks to be holding back the laughter on the touchline.

It was football at its unpredictable and hilarious best, and in honour of O'Shea's moment of genius, here are my top 10 goals that were incredible for a defender:

(Players like Koeman and Roberto Carlos who made a habit of scoring screamers are obviously excluded)

10: Danny Rose v Arsenal, White Hart Lane, 2010.

Centre forwards rarely dream of scoring goals this good. Let alone left-backs making their debut at White Hart Lane in the north London derby.

9: Djimi Traore v Tigres, Century Link Field, 2013.

At first glance one could think this goal should be higher up in the list. But those of us you watched Djimi play know that this was rather a bit of a hit and hope, but to borrow that old FIFA clich, "If you don't buy a ticket, you can't win the raffle" - Well Djimi bought a ticket, and with it he scored only his second career goal.

8: John O'Shea v Arsenal, Highbury, 2005.

See above.

7: Graeme Le Saux v Brazil, Wembley, 1995.

Graeme Le Saux, while contributing many an assist from the left flank of Chelsea and England's attack never scored too many. But for he England he did score once, and only once. But what a goal this was.

6: Anton Ferdinand v Fulham, Upton Park, 2006

Ian Darke is perhaps unparalleled in the commentary booth when describing the unexpected. He's not bad in the John O'Shea clip but it's his rising vocals on the words "by Anton Ferdinand!" in this clip that capture not just how good Darke is at his job, but also the unexpected brilliance of this goal.

5: Tony Adams v Everton, Highbury, 1998.

Where O'Shea once found himself foraying into no man's land he was really just copying the master of charging centre-backs - Tony Adams.

"It's Tony Adams put through by Steve Bould. Can you believe it!!" yelled Martin Tyler as Adams smashed in the goal that saw Arsenal clinch their first Premier League title.

4: Edmilson v Costa Rica, Suwon World Cup Stadium, 2002

This game finished 5-2 to Brazil. I remember getting up a 7am to watch it which is one of the best decisions I've ever made. Nobody bothered to defend and one of Brazil's players, Barcelona's Edmilson, who never scored for his country before or since decided to roam up the pitch and smash this bicycle kick into the far corner.

3: Josimar v Northern Ireland and Josimar v Poland. Estadio Jalisco, Mexico, 1986

Remember Josimar? - The gangly right-back who was called up late to Brazil's 1986 squad after an injury to Edson. A man who looked so utterly out of place standing next to Zico, Socrates, and Careca. A man who one assumed would simply play a bit part to the talents of the geniuses surrounding him.

40 minutes into his debut he did this:

And in the next round against Poland he scored an equally impressive goal:

2: Philippe Mexes v Anderlecht, Constant Vanden Stock Stadium, 2012

Philippe Mexes, a man with a short fuse who is never too far away from a naughty headline, did this just a couple years ago, and only one week after Zlatan's more famous bicycle kick vs England too.

1: Lilian Thuram v Croatia, Stade de France, 1998

While these two goals scored by Lilian Thuram in the semi-finals of France 98 may not be as technically impressive as some on this list, they are by far the most important. Thuram, France's most capped player with an incredible 142 appearances over 14 years, is one of the best defenders to grace the modern game.

But in 141 out of the 142 games he played for Les Blues, he never came to close to scoring. The solitary time he did however was in a World Cup semi-final, in his home country, against underdogs Croatia after his own mistake had seen France fall 1-0 behind. Thuram went from national villain to hero in the space of 25 minutes by scoring twice, booking France a place in that infamous final against Brazil.

Premier League: Sunderland boss must turn radio down

Gus Poyet is making his job more difficult by riling Sunderland fans

Michael Lintorn is worried that Gus Poyet is in danger of talking his way out of the Sunderland job...

Gus Poyet was known as "The Radio" during his playing days due to his fondness for flapping his gums, and he has become even more outspoken since moving into management (well, head coach-ery to be more precise).

Fans might forgive that propensity for brashness when results are positive, but with Sunderland on a run of one Premier League win in 12 - and four losses in five - right as Poyet made comments that will be perceived as scapegoating the supporters, it isn't a healthy.

A month ago, the Uruguayan angrily proclaimed that "I am not going to be a head coach when it suits and a manager when it doesn't" in an attempt to pin the side's proximity to the relegation zone on the men doing the buying and selling.

The arrival of Jermain Defoe earlier in January prompted a change of mindset, with Poyet saying that: "I am telling you there are no excuses now. I am responsible, so whatever happens from this point onwards is down to me."

However, in the aftermath of a dreadfully-received 0-0 home FA Cup fourth-round draw with Fulham, the former Brighton boss presented what could quite easily be interpreted as an excuse: "There are players who need the famous 'confidence' word for them to be better and when the stadium is not happy, the players don't express themselves."

Couple that with a dig at Sunderland's last beloved squad - "Niall Quinn and Kevin Phillips was kick and rush" - and some bold assumptions about the crowd - "I think the fans want Quinn and Phillips back" and "the fans are still living in the past" - and it no surprise that he has antagonised many.

It is important to clarify that he isn't faced with universal disapproval. Many believe that his feats last season, keeping the Black Cats up from bottom at Christmas and reaching the Capital One Cup final, should buy him time, and will realise that hastily dismissing Martin O'Neill and Paolo Di Canio didn't get them too far.

Additionally, while Poyet was clearly too critical of the Stadium of Light regulars, he did at least offer some concession by admitting that the negative response was his problem to fix. "It is up to me to find a solution to connect with the fans through better play... It is not nice to watch, I can understand that. All I can say is I promise you I will try to find a way to bring more excitement to the stadium."

Still, even if the 47-year-old still has his backers, the detractors are always more audible regardless of whether they are a minority, and he is working for a club who made mid-season managerial changes in each of the past three campaigns.

For that reason, 12.011/1 seems a massive price on Poyet being the next Premier League tactician to leave his position, with four other coaches available at shorter prices to be the next one jilted.

Sunderland host Burnley, who have lost just once in four league games, in their next match and the reaction will be ugly as an eyesore is another defeat is forthcoming. Poyet might have the answers, but every needless jab at the fans makes it less likely that he will be given the time to provide them.

Against All Odds: Argentinian clash to be defence friendly

Will River Plate get over their disappointment?

The start of the season in Argentina is on the horizon and Paul Robinson is tipping that the warm-up friendly between River Plate and Independiente to be low-scoring.

River Plate v Independiente
Wednesday January 28, 01:10 GMT

A poor end to the campaign ended up costing River Plate their second successive league title and they will be desperate to make amends in 2015. On the whole they are still the best team in the country and I wouldn't back against them regaining the championship this year.

Marcelo Gallardo's side haven't exactly performed well in their three recent friendly outings though as they are still to score a goal. 1-0 defeats to Universitario and Boca Juniors sandwiched a 0-0 draw at home to Estudiantes. Those scorelines lead me to believe that there won't be too many goals tonight either as 'Los Millonarios' are usually very solid at the back.

Independiente enjoyed a fine season last time following their promotion back to the top flight. A fourth place finish was about the best they could hope for and while they lost two of their last three fixtures, they would have only finished in third place if they'd have won them.

Jorge Almirn's men were involved in plenty of high-scoring affairs last year but their sole pre-season friendly finished 1-0. It's also worth noting that over 20% of their games last term rewarded over 1.5 goal layers.

I very much doubt that this will be full of goals and I quite like the look of 0-0. That's why, with over 1.5 goals trading at around the 1.51/2 mark, I have to make it my lay of the day.

Football Bet of the Day: Lions to devour islanders

Everyone in Portugal loves a Sporting da Covilha home win

Santa Clara make the long journey to Covilha today and Tobias Gourlay says they might regret ever setting out

Sporting da Covilha v Santa Clara
Wednesday 15:00

No one landed anything in south London yesterday. Not Millwall, not Reading and certainly not us. 0-0.

Back to Portugal today, but we've slipped a division.

Sporting da Covilha are up to ninth in the 24-team Segunda Liga after winning 3/4 over the last month or so.

At Estadio Jose Santos Pinto the Lions' recent record is evening better: they're W7-D1-L0 since mid-September. There have been 20 goals scored in those eight matches - and 19 have belonged to the home side.

Today's visitors have travelled over from the Azores, but might wonder why they bother. Ensconced in the relegation zone, Santa Clara lost 3/3 in 2015 and have been churning out the worst kinds of away result for a while longer than that.

They haven't won on the road since August (W0-D3-L6), losing 5/5 since early November and scoring just twice across the most recent six.

Sheffield United v Tottenham: Spurs to shatter Blades' Wembley dreams

Nigel Clough has led Sheffield Utd to some great cup wins

League One Sheffield United have done superbly to reach the League Cup semi-finals, but Kevin Hatchard thinks their run will end against a strong Spurs side...

Sheffield United v Tottenham
Wednesday January 28, 19:45
Live on Sky Sports 1

Sheffield United

The Blades of Sheffield United have sliced and diced some big names in cup competitions of late. Nigel Clough has masterminded wins over QPR, Fulham and Aston Villa in the FA Cup, and his charges have seen off West Ham and Southampton this season in the League Cup.

A two-legged victory over Spurs would be Clough's biggest scalp so far. United dug in superbly last week as they lost 1-0 at White Hart Lane. They sprang back into their required shape with speed and diligence, they maintained their discipline, and Clough was even disappointed that a better result wasn't achieved.

The key to United's recent cup success has been keeping things tight and being defensively resolute. If you put those five cup shocks I mentioned together, the Blades kept three clean sheets and conceded just two goals.

At the other end of the pitch things aren't so encouraging. The Yorkshire outfit have netted just 30 goals in 24 League One games, and of the top ten sides in the division only Fleetwood have scored fewer. Including last week's first leg, United have scored just once in their last three games. They will need to score at least twice to progress without a penalty shootout, something they've done just five times in their last 20 games.

After making eight changes for the weekend's FA Cup draw with Preston, Clough is expected to select a similar line-up to last week. Kieran Wallace and Che Adams are both available again after they were cup-tied.

Tottenham

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has described this as the biggest game of the season for his side, and he is bang on. The Lilywhites haven't been to a major final since they were beaten on penalties by Manchester United in the 2009 final of this competition, so reaching Wembley would be an early endorsement of Pochettino's reign. At a club where managers can quickly find themselves skating on wafer-thin ice, such boosts are welcome.

Spurs have been further focused by Saturday's painful FA Cup exit to Leicester City. Tottenham led 1-0 with seven minutes to go, but lost 2-1, with keeper Michel Vorm feebly letting in a ghastly stoppage-time winner. The Dutch custodian has been given a vote of confidence by Pochettino, and he faces a test of nerve at Bramall Lane.

Tottenham's Premier League away form should give them plenty of encouragement ahead of this game. They have won five of their ten road matches in the league, despite only scoring 14 goals on their travels.

Rising star Harry Kane has been enjoying his away games this term, as he has netted seven goals in 12 road matches in all competitions. As such he is an understandably short 1.784/5 in the To Score market. Kane will return to the starting XI as a host of key players are restored to the side, but Nacer Chadli (compassionate leave) and Nabil Bentaleb (Africa Cup of Nations) remain absent.

Match Odds

This is Sheffield United's sternest cup test of the past two seasons, and I think their adventure will come to an end. Spurs dominated possession in the first leg without much penetration, but at some stage the hosts will have to open up to try and erase that first-leg deficit. That's when Tottenham's flair players like Christian Eriksen can come alive.

If the tie is still in the balance in the closing stages, Spurs have shown they can finish games strongly. Four of their Premier League away wins have come via goals in the 89th minute or later, so there are no worries about their fitness fading.

People are excited about Sheffield United because of their list of scalps, but 1.875/6 is a great price for a top-six Premier League team fielding a strong side to win away to a League One team.

Over/Under 2.5 Goals

The market is more or less split down the middle here, and I'm not surprised. Sheffield United will try to keep things close before a late assault, and it's worth noting that 14 of United's last 18 games have featured fewer than three goals. However, if Spurs can get a demoralising opener, they might be able to catch the hosts on the break and run away with it.

If forced to I'd lean towards backing unders at 1.9420/21, but I'd actually be more inclined to back No in the Both Teams To Score market at 2.021/1. If Spurs win big but keep a clean sheet you're still covered.

Half Time

The first-leg winner from Andros Townsend didn't come until the 74th minute, and I suspect this game could follow a similar pattern. Pochettino says Spurs will play aggressively, but with the tie so tight, neither team may risk much early on.

There are a couple of plays here - you could back 0-0 in the Correct Score market at 13.5n/a and Cash Out when the game starts to open up, or you could back Draw in the Half Time market at 2.226/5. Spurs have been level at the break in six of their last eight matches in all competitions, while Blades have been deadlocked at HT in seven of their last 11.

You could of course double up and go for Draw/Spurs in the HT/FT market at 5.39/2, but I'll keep my selections separate.

Recommended Bets
Back Spurs to win at 1.875/6
Back Draw in the Half Time market at 2.226/5

Senegal v Algeria: Algerians good value to send the Lions packing

Expect Algeria to be celebrating come the final whistle against lop-sided Senegal

Dave Farrar predicts the Lions of Teranga will 'do a Gabon' and catch the next flight home...

Senegal v Algeria
Tuesday, 18:00
Live on ITV4

We've already seen one team at this tournament start with a win against their apparently biggest rivals, only to lose their next two matches and fade out of contention. And I'm starting to wonder whether Senegal are about to "do a Gabon" and catch the next flight home.

Ivory Coast are meant to be the lopsided team at these events, all attack and no substance, but it's been equally true of the Lions of Teranga this time around.

You can take a cursory look at the options from which Alain Giresse can choose, and make the lazy assumption that they should be one of the favourites here, especially given their excellent defensive record in qualifying. Two of Moussa Sow, Papiss Ciss, Mame Biram Diouf, Dame N'Doye and Sadio Mane would get into most teams at this tournament, but so far they have been starved of service.

When a physical Ghana tried to match them in that opening game, Senegal were able to bully the Black Stars and snatch a late winner. When South Africa backed up their pre-match talk and tried to pass the ball around them, and use pace and intelligence to beat them, it very nearly worked.

The Senegalese midfield looked cumbersome and clumsy, and Diouf and co were starved.  Senegal's problem here is that Algeria play like South Africa, but they do it a whole lot better.

I wouldn't read too much into Algeria's defeat by Ghana. It was a tight game between two good teams, and it was won by a moment of brilliance. That can happen. If Algeria stick to what they're good at, and follow the Bafana Bafana plan, then their nimble front six should be far too good for Senegal and I'm confident that they can land a win which is currently priced at 2.68/5.

All of that would lead to Ghana winning the Group and Algeria finishing second, leading us to two highly unpredictable quarter-finals against Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Guinea or Mali.

If both Group C teams head into those games with momentum as I think they will, then we could be looking at two semi finalists, both with a great chance of going all the way.

Recommended Bet:
Back Algeria to beat Senegal @ 2.68/5
