Timeform UK SmartPlays: Wednesday December 12

Andrew Balding's Breakheart holds strong claims today.

With both UK turf meetings today succumbing to frozen tracks, we head towards the polytrack at Lingfield and Kempton for our three selections...

Stand Guard (15:00 Lingfield) swooped late to nab his fourteenth career success at Wolverhampton last week, each of those coming on the all-weather, and a 6-lb penalty for that success may not be enough to prevent the eight-year-old from further adding to that tally here. That victory came over 1 miles but this drop back in trip will prove no barrier as both his earlier 2012 successes came over 1 miles and he remains a well-treated sort having won off higher marks in his youth. With an impressive strike rate and in the absence of the in-form Chookie Hamilton, he seems certain go close again.

Half an hour later Breakheart (15:30 Lingfield) is another looking to follow-up a last-time-out success and he can overcome a 5-lb rise in the weights resulting from a Kempton victory a fortnight ago to take the finale. That was the first run back for this former useful sort since returning to the Andrew Balding yard and, having plummeted in the weights in the meantime, he proved a well-backed victor. With his sparkle re-discovered, he looks one to keep on side for a good while yet.

Over at Kempton Mr Knightley (17:15 Kempton) looks to have everything going for him to belatedly get off the mark for 2012. A three-time winner last autumn when sporting blinkers (including over course-and-distance) and having slipped in the weights since, the return of headgear last week saw a year-best effort at Lingfield when only caught late on. Ideally berthed in stall one for one who often forces the pace, he will be a big player if backing that run up.
