Wetherby Placepot: Wednesday October 17

Wednesday's Placepot comes from Wetherby

Tony McFadden brings you a suggested Placepot permutation from this afternoon's meeting at Wetherby...

13:50 - We are presented with a tricky opening leg to negotiate as there is not much hurdling form to go on. Liberty's Gift disappointed last time when the tongue-tie was removed, but, with that aid back on today, we will take a chance that he can repeat some of his fairly useful hurdles form and finish in the places. There are stamina concerns about the Irish raider, though, so we will also add I Shot The Sheriff for insurance purposes. A winner of a Southwell bumper on debut last year, he is now in the care of David Pipe and looks like one of the more likely types to make an impression here.

14:20 - The second race provides us with our first opportunity to include a banker selection as we rely on Don't Take Me Alive. A fair performer on the Flat, there was plenty of encouragement to be taken from his hurdling debut at Market Rasen, keeping on in the closing stages to finish fourth. Hailing from a good yard and with a top jockey booked, it is difficult to see Don't Take Me failing to put up a bold show.

14:50 - A tricky little handicap and we will keep a couple of contenders onside. The first horse we turn to is Cool Touch, who makes his return today from a significant lay-off of over a year. Trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies, lack of fitness is unlikely to be a concern for Cool Touch and with first-time blinkers applied he looks sure to go well. Temple Lord is the other horse that we will include in the 'pot'. He has shown a fairly useful level of form over fences and has been running consistently of late, often making the frame.

15:25 - Tinseltown has been in good form on the Flat, scoring three times, and he holds obvious claims on his return to hurdles. He has proven to be fairly consistent and that is a trait much valued for Placepot purposes so he is included in the perm. We will also add Bothy. Brian Ellison's gelding finished runner-up in a couple of valuable handicaps at Newbury and Cheltenham in 2011 and, based on those efforts, is on a fair mark. He should strip fitter for a couple of recent Flat efforts and it would be no surprise were this tough gelding to bounce back to form.

15:55 - Sherwani Wolf, making his debut for Charlie Longsdon, looks like a fascinating contender. His best effort last year came on his reappearance, chasing home the smart Invictus at a respectable distance, and it is hoped that he will also go well fresh here. Gansey hasn't always impressed with his consistency, but he has fallen to a fair mark based on his best efforts and, with his yard having registered a few winners of late, we will take a chance on Sue Smith's gelding.

16:30 - Dursey Sound could prove difficult to beat, despite having to carry a penalty for a comfortable success on his hurdles debut. Jumping fluently in the main, Dursey Sound created a good impression and, with the potential of more still to come, he is included as a final-leg banker.
