Timeform Daily: Tuesday, Musselburgh 14:45

David Pipe is the trainer of Swing Bowler.

Timeform provide a runner-by-runner guide to a valuable and competitive handicap hurdle at Musselburgh on New Year's day...

Agent Archie was useful on Flat and won first 2 starts over hurdles at this trip. Has struggled in handicaps this term, though, shaping as if amiss at Aintree (17f) back in October. Cheekpieces now tried.

Ingleby Spirit's best efforts over hurdles have come over C&D, winning twice. Fair fourth at Doncaster last month and set to better that back at this track. One to consider.

Jet Master is a free-going sort who improved for the fitting of tongue tie, placed last 5 starts over hurdles (fell on chase bow in between). Doesn't look to have a great deal in hand of handicap mark, though.

Capellanus' best races for Edward O'Grady in Ireland came with headgear fitted and shaped well starting out for new yard over inadequate 2m at Wetherby last month. Will be of more interest over further.

Dontpaytheferryman won 3 times in space of a month over C&D at the start of 2012. Fair run in Wetherby handicap hurdle last month before dropping away on subsequent chase bow with visor back on. Needs more.

Call Back was a bumper winner who took well to hurdling initially, winning at Bangor and Cartmel (17f). Opening mark stiff judged on defeat in Gerry Feilden on return, though.

Arctic Court has been given a chance by the handicapper and hinted at a rival at Cheltenham (17f) last time behind easy winner Dark Lover. Will benefit from a return to 2m+, probably on better ground.

Swing Bowler is a well-bred mare who has made perfect start, the form of latest win in 17f Newton Abbot novice hurdle working out despite her looking shade fortunate. Could make a mockery of opening mark on return.

Ultimate won twice over fences around 2m last season and back to form when fifth over further in handicap hurdle here last month. Return to 2m will suit and looks the pick of yard's 4 runners.

Rumble of Thunder ran respectably in this from 15 lb higher mark 12 months ago and offered more encouragement last time. Test will suit and connections had well-backed winner at Kelso on Saturday. Very interesting.

Amtired won 2m novice hurdle at Wetherby early last season and improved efforts in handicaps after fitted with cheekpieces. Had recent pipe-opener on the AW but needs to improve to defy this mark.

Cool Baranca enjoyed profitable 2012, winning 4 handicap hurdles around this trip and on the Flat here. Well held in stronger company than she usually keeps at Aintree last time, though, and this tough also.

Amok won twice on Flat in France and off the mark in 2m Fakenham novice handicap hurdle in November, left clear last. Up 11 lb and this a lot tougher but still unexposed.

Mason Hindmarsh was a winning juvenile hurdler and successful twice on the level as Flat season ended. Fair effort in 2m handicap here last month and may be that longer trip is what he needs now.

Timeform 1-2-3
1. Swing Bowler
2. Rumble of Thunder
3. Ingleby Spirit

Timeform Verdict: A valuable handicap hurdle with Swing Bowler taken to knock her rivals for six on her handicap debut and maintain her unbeaten record. Very much one to follow, an opening mark of 123 could seriously underestimate David Pipe's charge. Rumble of Thunder is an interesting alternative, while course specialist Ingleby Spirit will doubtless be popular.

Challow Hurdle Result: Taquin ploughs to Challow victory

Jonjo O'Neill: trainer of Taquin de Seuil

Taquin de Seuil justified favouritism to continue Jonjo O'Neill's excellent record in the Challow Hurdle.

Strong in the betting all day, Taquin de Seuil was always travelling strongly under Champion Jockey AP McCoy and looked all over the winner when taking over from long-time leader Ballybough Pat after three out.

Once shaken up, it briefly looked as though Taquin de Seuil wasn't picking up for pressure, allowing the Paul Nicholls-trained Easter Day a brief look in before he responded, putting a seal on things before the last and eventually running out a nine-length winner. Ballybough Pat plugged on to finish another three and three-quarter lengths back in third.

Clondaw Kaempfer, the Donald McCain-trained second-favourite, was never really travelling in the gruelling conditions and was pulled up quite sharply in the straight by Jason Maguire.

The winner is now priced at 11.010/1 for the Neptune Novices' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, behind only Irish-trained Pont Alexandre.

Irish Handicappers' Corner: Tidal Bay lands Lexus and loses Timeform squiggle

Tidal Bay landed the Lexus Chase and lost his Timeform squiggle.

Timeform look back on an eventful Leopardstown Christmas Festival, kicking off with a thrilling renewal of the Lexus Chase...

The Lexus Chase was arguably as anticipated a Christmas clash as the King George, featuring as it did the two most exciting chasers in Ireland, namely Flemenstar and Sir des Champs, plus an interesting raider from Britain in the shape of Tidal Bay, and it provided one of the most thrilling finishes through the whole of 2012.

Flemenstar and Sir des Champs, who had finished first and second in the John Durkan earlier in the month, started at odds of 5/4 and 9/4 respectively, but it was the third in the betting, the Paul Nicholls-trained Tidal Bay, who upstaged the pair with a remarkable performance, in the process giving his handler his third win in the race in the last six years.

Success for Tidal Bay looked unlikely even at the last but, under an expert ride from Ruby Walsh, the mercurial veteran finished strongly to burst between Flemenstar and First Lieutenant close home and get up in the dying strides.

In form terms, Tidal Bay didn't actually need to reproduce the form he showed when second to Bobs Worth in the Hennessy, his narrow success in a pulsating finish earning him a performance rating of 166 compared to the career-best 174 he achieved at Newbury, but it did prompt a notable change in another area, with a decision taken to remove his much-discussed Timeform squiggle, a symbol that is used to denote a horse that should be approached with caution from a betting perspective.

The squiggle was first handed to Tidal Bay after a couple of disappointing efforts in the 2008/9 campaign, with a reluctant performance when fifth in that season's Melling Chase seen as the final straw. However, despite still needing careful handling and displaying a trademark high head carriage, it's plain to see he's been rejuvenated since joining Paul Nicholls from the now-disqualified Howard Johnson, meaning it's only fair that the symbol bites the dust - for now, at least.

The horse who actually shaped best in the Lexus was the favourite Flemenstar, and consequently his Timeform rating has gone up from 173 to 175. Peter Casey's 7-y-o came into the race on the back of seven straight victories and was simply stretched by the trip in the conditions, tanking along out wide under a more patient ride than usual and having everything else in trouble when cruising to front rounding the home turn but finding his earlier exertions taking their toll having touched down two lengths to the good at the last.

Flemenstar deserves another crack at three miles in the Hennessy Gold Cup back at Leopardstown in February, but he now seems an unlikely Gold Cup contender and a clash with Sprinter Sacre (183p) in the Champion Chase at Cheltenham could be on the cards.

Second-placed First Lieutenant improved 4lb to a figure of 166 and has developed into a remarkably consistent chaser. He got much closer to Tidal Bay than he had last time, despite being 7 lb worse off with that one, and will have place claims again in the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Willie Mullins' Sir des Champs wasn't far off his best in bare form terms and is actually now rated 170, after we raised the John Durkan a few pounds. However, it was a performance that asked as many questions as it answered, as it was a rather laboured effort despite being back at a more suitable trip. Sir des Champs was off the bridle well before the other principals due to some indifferent jumps, but he stayed on well late on to almost get up for third and still has time to stake his Gold Cup claim, with the Hennessy in February likely to be his next port of call.

Going back to day one of the Festival, and it was another Mullins horse who was the headline act, namely Arvika Ligeonneire. Arvika Ligeonneire didn't need to run right up to his best of 158 to win the Grade 1 Racing Post Novice Chase but he wasn't as impressive as he had been in the Drinmore, tending to jump out to his right on his first try on a left-handed track over fences and needing to be driven right out to hold the renewed effort of Oscars Well after getting in close to the last. He shouldn't be marked down, however, as a return to a sounder surface is likely to show him in a better light and he'll be the one to beat in the Irish Arkle back at Leopardstown.

As usual on day two, just a handful of runners went to post in the Grade 1 Dial-a-bet Chase, and it essentially developed into a match, with Sizing Europe and Rubi Light having it to themselves pretty much throughout.

Sizing Europe (master rating of 172) rewarded his connections' decision to send him to Leopardstown rather than have a tilt at the King George with a sixth Grade 1 win over fences, and he didn't need to be at his very best, credited with a performance rating of 167. It is hard to see him beating an on-song Sprinter Sacre in the Champion Chase at Cheltenham, so it's no surprise a return to 21f for the Ryanair Chase is reportedly under serious consideration.

The following race on the card, the Future Champions Novice Hurdle lived up to its billing as Jessie Harrington's Jezki kept his unbeaten record intact with a 6-length victory over Waaheb. Jezki is most progressive and is clearly one of the best novice hurdlers seen out so far this season, rated 150p on the back of this latest win, and on this evidence he will be the one to beat in the Supreme Novices' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

There were two other Graded races on Lexus day, starting with the Christmas Hurdle, in which the first four from the Hatton's Grace renewed rivalry. In the event, Monksland (157) didn't need to be at his very best to turn around recent Fairyhouse form with Zaidpour, and he will have solid each-way claims in the World Hurdle now that Big Buck's is out of action.

In a strong renewal of the Grade 1 Topaz Novice Chase, the Willie Mullins-trained pair that drew clear after the last, Back In Focus and Aupcharlie, marked themselves out as Cheltenham contenders. Back In Focus is now rated 152p, having progressed again to maintain his unbeaten record by the skin of his teeth, looking held early on the run-in but finding plenty to lead under pressure near the finish. He is open to further improvement granted sufficient emphasis on stamina, will be suited by further than 3m and would take some beating in a soft-ground RSA Chase.

Aupcharlie ran an absolute blinder on just his second start over fences, taking his rating from 136p to 151 in one hit. Jumping soundly, he travelled best to loom up two out but was caught close home after pecking at the last. He will reportedly be kept away from the winner now and looks one of the strongest contenders for the Jewson at this stage.

The final day of the Festival saw Hurricane Fly make short work of his rivals in the Grade 1 Festival Hurdle, adding to his 2010 win in the corresponding race in impressive style. Looking as good as ever, backed up by a performance rating of 169+, Hurricane Fly jumped fluently and travelled strongly, before quickening to lead entering the straight and soon going clear. It's more than three years since he tasted defeat on home soil, but he's going to be made to work a lot harder if he's to win another Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham and his aura of invincibility was lost in defeat there last year, allowing that he might not have been right on the day.

The Championship Previews: Stay at home on first day of 2013

Ferguson's Posh have been in excellent scoring form of late

Mike Norman looks ahead to the New Year's Day fixtures in the Championship and predicts home wins for these three clubs...

Ipswich 2.6813/8 v Brighton 2.8415/8; The Draw 3.55n/a

Ipswich are on the up under Mick McCarthy. Rising three or four positions to 19th in the table might not seem a huge step, but points wise the Tractor Boys have put an impressive gap between themselves and the relegation zone under the former Sunderland and Wolves boss.

Ipswich are now eight points clear of the relegation zone after a run of just one defeat in eight games, and amazingly they are just three points behind 12th place Blackpool and 10 points off a play-off spot. I'm not saying they are going to make the play-offs, far from it, but they are one of the clubs in the Championship who can enter 2013 well and truly looking upwards rather than downwards.

McCarthy's men are unbeaten in five at Portman Road and face a Brighton side who have failed to win in any of their previous five league games, so purely on recent form, this ought to go the way of the hosts.

The Seagulls have been one of the lowest scoring sides in the Championship this term; take out their five game winning streak at the start of the season and Gus Poyet's men have mustered just 18 goals in 19 games. Ipswich have averaged almost two goals per game in the last six weeks or so and I can see them winning this game by a small margin.

Recommended Bet: Back Ipswich to win @ 2.6813/8

Peterborough 2.3211/8 v Barnsley 3.39/4; The Draw 3.711/4

Peterborough were available to back at around the 3.412/5 mark when the market opened for Saturday's game at Bristol City. By kick-off they were just 2.77/4 to back, so there'll be a lot of people - including myself - hoping to recoup losses following their 4-2 defeat.

Posh went a goal down very early at Ashton Gate and then had their top scorer Lee Tomlin sent off with around 80 minutes to play, so they can certainly be excused that reversal. Even with 10 men Darren Ferguson's side still managed to score two goals, and that means Posh have scored a very impressive 14 goals in their last five games, winning against the likes of Cardiff, Bolton and Wolves.

Barnsley are rock bottom of the Championship after recording just one win in their last 15 games. They are the least prolific side in the division when it comes to scoring goals - just 25 scored in 25 games - and I sense that they will need at least two, possibly three, to take anything from London Road against 'free-scoring' Peterborough. A home win is the most likely outcome.

Recommended Bet: Back Peterborough to win @ 2.3211/8 (best bet)

Sheffield Wednesday 2.47/5 v Burnley 3.211/5; The Draw 3.55n/a

The Owls are another 'relegation-threatened' side who have found a bit of form lately, and like Ipswich and Peterborough, they have every reason to believe that they can climb the table in 2013 rather than go backwards.

Dave Jones' men play some very attractive football but defensively they have been caught short in the first half of the season. They don't have a prolific striker in their ranks and when you are not scoring many goals the onus is then on the defence to keep clean sheets. And that's exactly what they've done in recent weeks, four in a row in fact meaning the Owls have taken 10 points from the last 12 available to them.

Wednesday will enter this game full of confidence then, and even though Burnley are a decent outfit capable of improving on their mid-table position, I feel home advantage and recent form just about swings this in Sheff Wed's favour.

Recommended Bet: Back Sheff Wed to win @ 2.47/5

Follow The Money: Final movers of 2012

FTM are backing two at Lingfield today

Today's New Year's Eve Follow The Money comes from the cards at Lingfield and Uttoxeter. It's a quickfire treble for you, and within a little over half an hour we will know whether we are to see in the New Year with Champagne or Blue Nun.

Let's start at Lingfield and the 13:30 6f Handicap where Commanche has been solidly backed from 3.39/4 into 2.6813/8. The selection made a winning start to his all-weather career at Kempton in his last race, and a 5lb rise for that seems fair. Jockey Adam Kirby keeps the ride, and is in cracking good form having had two wins from three at this course just yesterday. Overall, our punters like the chances of Commanche registering a second win on the bounce, and are backing him to do so.

On the face of it, Landenstown Star has every chance in the 13:40 3m Handicap Chase at a heavy ground Uttoxeter. While the selection has a lot going for him and is still odds-on to land the spoils, he has drifted from an early low of 1.412/5 out to a current 1.9210/11.  His Boxing Day run at Ffos Las on heavy over 2m5f was a winning one. However, easy that win was, and he won by 16 lengths, it must have taken something out of Tim Vaughan's charge, and perhaps another slog over three miles when turned out so quickly, and up 7lb, is going to find Landenstown Star out today. Lay!

There's a real market steamer to tell you about in the 14:00 at Lingfield. Punters have smashed into Johnstown Lad at all prices from a high of 13.5n/a and they're still lining up to take the 5.69/2 now on offer.  Quite why the market has moved so appreciably for him is a bit of a mystery, as the selection hasn't won in two years. But it is worth noting that his handicap mark has become a lot more attractive as a result. Our Timeform colleagues rate Johnstown Lad as 'folly to dismiss' and that's good enough to rate as a confident 'back' for me.

Recommended Bets
Back Commanche @ 2.6813/8 Lingfield 13:30
Lay Landenstown Star @ 1.9210/11 Uttoxeter 13:40
Back Johnstown Lad @ 5.69/2 Lingfield 14:00

The Joker's Bet of the Day: Hapoel New Year

There should be a spectacular end to 2012 in Israel

Another major holiday spent on the shores of the Mediterranean

Livorno 2 Juve Stabia 2. That's nine wins in 11.

In Israel's Liga Leumit three of Hapoel Petach Tikva's most recent five home games have gone Over 2.5 Goals and so have 9/16 Maccabi Herzliya away matches.

Recommended Bet: Back Over 2.5 Goals @ 2.245/4 in Hapoel Petach Tikva v Maccabi Herzliya
