Last year's champion US two-year-old was found to be suffering from a pelvic stress fracture after finishing a disappointing fifth in the Florida Derby.

Having been declared an absentee from the Kentucky Derby following that run, it has since come to light that the injury is worse than first feared, according to a press release from Starlight Racing, owners of Shanghai Bobby along with Susan Magnier, Derrick Smith, and Michael Tabor.

According to the statement, Shanghai Bobby will need a 90-day rest period, but could make a full recovery.

"Although it is disappointing that Shanghai Bobby has sustained this injury, perhaps this offers an explanation of his performance in the Florida Derby," trainer Todd Pletcher said in the release published by www.drf.com.
