Timeform UK SmartPlays: Monday January 21

The snow has claimed Kempton today

Timeform bring you three bets from the sole surviving meeting at Wolverhampton.

It's a typically late start for a Monday Wolverhampton meeting and by the time of the first race at 14:35 we'll be itching for our first bet. Admittedly, it's a careful one due to the lurking threat of relative youngsters Strong Man and Passionada in this sprint handicap, but eight-year-old Cardinal looks a solid each-way option to kick-off our week's punting. He had a stutter towards the end of last year but returned from a seven-week break at near the top of his game over six furlongs here at the start of the month, travelling well but just unable to reel in a couple of more positively-ridden rivals. Cardinal is well treated off the same mark as it is, even more so when you consider old form, and although raced chiefly at six furlongs he has the speed for five, so he should be on the premises, with a win and place bet encouraged in case one of the more unexposed sorts in the line-up delivers an improved performance.

There's a two-hour break between first bet and second, a handicap over Wolverhampton's extended mile at 16:35 our next port of call. It's far from the strongest race, which leads to the thinking that Meglio Ancora has a good opportunity to get back to winning ways. He dropped to a mark just 1 lb higher than for his latest success after a poor start to the winter campaign but showed much more sign of life when runner-up over C&D last week to one that's hit a rich vein of form. It's doubtful that a return to his fairly useful best is in the offing, but from the same mark as last time it probably won't take much improvement at all for Meglio Ancora to go one better.

Our final SmartPlay comes in the final race of the day at 17:35. On weight-adjusted Timeform ratings there isn't much between the field (3lb covers all 10) but there other factors that would appear to make Lean On Petesomething of a standout. The fact he's among the least exposed in the field is an obvious starting point, but there's also the small matter of a stellar record over C&D- in five runs over this unique trip, he's won three and finished second on the other two occasions. Throw in the fact that the latest of those wins came on his most recent start, when he overcame trouble in running to lead late, and it's not difficult to see why Lean On Pete is fancied to go in again should circumstances fall his way.
